Product Review: Eggies

Have you ever been in your local Target or Wal-Mart or some other discount store and stumbled across one of those "As Seen on TV" products?  I've seen them tons of times, and on occasion I give in to the urge and buy the product... sometimes with great results... and others, well... they get packaged back up and returned.

Last weekend, we were at Target doing a bit of kid-free shopping and as we meandered through the kitchen goodies area I saw a product I had heard about - Eggies.

Eggies-01

I really can't tell you what possessed us to pick this product up other than curiousity.  I thought that it would be cool to have some hard-boiled eggs on hand without shells so that My Boys could just grab one from the fridge and get a quick protein fix in the morning.  Not like it's hard to peel eggs or anything, but it could save a few moments... right?

I got the little box home and opened it up and read the directions.  After washing the pieces - and there are 4 little plastic pieces to each and every Eggie - I then assembled, cracked an egg into each one and got them going in a pot of water.

I noticed fairly quickly that one of the Eggies was not tightened enough... which meant bits of egg in the water... 1st one to get pulled out and tossed.  Thinking back, maybe I should have attempted to poach that egg since it was just hanging out in there anyway.

Then, as I was just checking the Eggies to see how they were coming along - another one opened up on me!  This one was nearly cooked, so it didn't really cause a problem.

Following the directions that came with them, I cooked them for about 17 minutes.  They did come out perfectly cooked... but, each one had one flat side.

Eggies-02

Based on the photos on the box, we had figured that somehow while they cooked they would end up "egg shaped".  Little did we know that the photos on the box were showing only the top half of the egg!

Pros:
  • No egg shells to peel
  • Perfectly cooked
  • Dishwasher safe
  • The flat side of the egg would lend itself well to certain types of food presentations... perhaps your deviled eggs would sit nicely without needing a special dish
Cons:
  • Too many pieces - 4 pieces for each Eggie to wash, assemble and store
  • Hard to be certain that each piece is tightened enough to ensure no "leakage" of eggs
  • Takes as much time as regular hard boiled eggs - not really any faster, even though the packaging says they are "quick" to prepare
  • If you like your hard boiled eggs to look like eggs, then you won't like that these have a "flat" side to them.
Will I keep this purchase?
I don't see the need for another one use item in my kitchen.  It's just as easy to prepare traditional hard boiled eggs without all the pieces to keep track of and assemble.  The fact that they are dishwasher safe is great - but they are small, so you would need to put them in one of those dishwasher baskets people use for baby bottle parts.  I'll be packaging these up and returning them to Target this weekend.

If you really can't stand peeling eggs, then I'd say go ahead and purchase these little Eggies for $9.99 and enjoy. Otherwise, skip them.

I was curious about them, too! But, like you, I just don't need another gadget taking up valuable cabinet real estate. Great post, Patsy!

Awesome review! I love how honest it is. It's refreshing to see a product that someone actually DIDN'T like.

We received a set of these at Christmas. Read the directions and went through the process of boiling eggs with the Eggies. For me, they were just too much trouble. I could have already boiled and peeled the eggs by the time I finished these. And the eggs are not perfectly round. I also had some of the egg come out while boiling. Don't think I'll be using these again.

(This is a different Patsy - not the one who started the post.)
Love your honest review. I have never seen anything like this.

Wow this product looks awesome and pefect for me. I can cook pretty good but cannot really make hard boiled eggs. It is my archiles heel. LOL. After your review I think I will keep on keeping on with my battle for the perfect hard boiled egg. I know one of these days I will master this task. Now when I am at Target with one of my girls and they say look you need this I can just say meh...and keep on walking. Thanks for saving me some mula...maybe I will buy some eggs with it. haha.

If you steam your eggs instead of boiling them, they will almost peel themselves! Still takes about the same amount of time, but peeling is a non-issue.

Oh thank you, thank you, thank you for such an honest review! Every time I walk by the As Seen On TV section of Bed, Bath & Beyond my eyes just glaze over and I swear I start chanting "Must. Have. That. Must. Have. That." I know you've just saved me $9.99 and certain heartbreak!
