Review: Cookie Dough Lover's Cookbook

Last week, I received a few different cookbooks... a couple I had purchased because I just had to have them and one was a review copy.  The funny thing (at least to me) was that they are all baking and/or dessert cookbooks!  I have a weakness for baking and making sweet treats to share with friends, and so it goes... I began digging into them this past weeked.

Upon receiving The Cookie Dough Lover's Cookbook: Cookies, Cakes, Candies, and More which happens to have been written AND photographed by Lindsey Landis of the blog Love and Olive Oil, I immediately began marking recipes to try.  How could you not want to make a variety of treats that all involve the forbidden cookie dough?  Well, it's not really forbidden in these recipes because the cookie dough part does not have any raw eggs in it.  That's right, you can lick the spoon without fear of salmonella or some other uncooked egg illness! Yipppeeeee!

Interestingly, the idea for this cookbook came after Lindsey had written a post and recipe for Cookie Dough Truffles - which is still her most popular post!  She was able to see the need for more recipes using raw cookie dough... we all love it, and can't resist it when baking.  And, if you can honestly say you've never licked the spoon or the beaters... well, you just haven't walked on the wild side, now have you? ;) 

The recipes span everything from candy to brownies to ice cream sandwiches to decadent breakfast treats!  While I don't think I could eat all these treats on a regular basis without having to triple my workouts, I am going to make an effort to sample as many as possible over a long period of time!

I am always thrilled to see a food blogger dive into the cookbook world and when they go the extra mile to ensure that each recipe has a photo to go with it, I know they "get it".  Just like Jaden Hair did with her book, The Steamy Kitchen Cookbook: 101 Asian Recipes Simple Enough for Tonight's Dinner, each recipe has a beautiful photo to go with it.  When I am looking for a recipe to make, I can be convinced by a photo that I need to make something... when it comes to cooking or baking, presentation is over half the battle for me to select a recipe.  A huge thumb's up goes out to both of these fabulous bloggers and cookbook authors.

So, what have I already made from this cookbook?  Well, My Boys helped me pick the first recipe... because I was having a hard time deciding!  So, it was the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownies!


I do have a love of layered treats, and this one more than met my expectations.  The recipe was written clearly and broken down into the steps needed for it to be successful.  The ingredients were also separated out for each layer - huge help for someone who likes to have things spelled out due to the many distractions that occur whenever I am in the kitchen.

Making a treat like this does involve a bit of waiting time due to cooling the brownies and then a little fridge time after putting the cookie dough layer over the brownies... but, that is to be expected with any layered treat... it takes time to make something so decadent.  While the recipe did say to cut into 2 inch squares, I cut mine a bit smaller... this is a rich dessert that is worth the calories, but I do like a bite-size treat. 

So, what else do I have marked to make from this cookbook? Here are just a few recipes I've marked:

  • Chocolate Cookie Dough Ice Cream

 I could go on, but it might begin to look like the table of contents at some point... and what is the fun in that?  I really recommend adding this cookbook to your collection because I can see returning to it frequently for ideas on things to bring to family gatherings, barbeques, potlucks or block parties... and there are a few treats that would make a perfect addition to the holiday treat trays!

Now, I'm not going to post the recipe to the brownies I made here because I'd really love to encourage you to purchase a copy of the cookbook... it's less than $15 on Amazon, which is a great price for a cookbook that has a gorgeous photo of each recipe and is spiral bound so that you an easily leave it open while baking.  You just know that the person who wrote this book knew what other bakers would want in a cookbook!

I have this cookbook sitting on my desk to review also but I still haven't baked from it yet! I have no idea what to make, everything looks so delicioues!
