The Boardwalk: Seaside Heights, NJ

What a gorgeous day we woke up to this morning after several days of rain and an amazing fireworks show in NYC by Macy's (more on that soon!).

When you live in New Jersey and the sun is shining and the sky is blue AND it's summer, it's a beach day or at least a "hit the boardwalk and have some fun" kind of day.  So, that's just what we did... although we didn't hit it as early as we would have liked (everyone slept in until 10 a.m. after a late night coming home from watching fireworks).  So, parking was limited (and EXPENSIVE) in Point Pleasant, which is closest to where we were staying.

So, we decided to keep driving South through many of the shore towns that don't have actual boardwalks... until we got to Seaside Heights.  While most people outside of NJ know of this area from a reality show from MTV, I'm not going to talk about that.  What we know of Seaside Heights is that it's not far from a state beach that we love for day trips - Island Beach State Park and that the boardwalk in Seaside has quite a lot to offer depending on what you want to do.

We were able to find municipal parking in Seaside Heights for $2 per hour (quite a find on a busy weekend day like today).  Other lots were charging up to $25 for the day in this area... a bit expensive, but people pay it when they can't find the less expensive muni lots to park in and they are ready to start their beach day.

Go Karts

Once we paid for the parking, we took a walk toward the boardwalk and noticed a Go Kart place just before crossing over the street.  It's $8 per driver and they need to be at least 54 inches tall to drive the bigger car, and I think it was 48 inches tall for the smaller car.  I can't remember how many times they allowed them to go around the track, but it seemed like a good 15 minutes or so... needless to say they had a great time racing around!

I love capturing the various beach umbrellas whenever we are near the shore.  So many colors and so many people out and enjoying what the shore has to offer!  We didn't do the beach today, but will be spending time at various beaches in the coming weeks.  I first shared this photo on Instagram (do you follow me there?  If not, search for FamFriendsFood to see the latest photos I'm sharing!).

After enjoying a number of rides on Casino Pier, we took a walk along the boardwalk in search of lemonade and ice cream.  No trip to the boardwalk is complete without some kind of indulgence, right?

A favorite stop of mine, no matter what boardwalk we are visiting, is Kohr's Frozen Custard.  My Oldest opted for the Strawberry Flavorburst custard, while My Youngest went more traditional with a vanilla/chocolate swirl.  I love the creaminess of their custard and it's a "must" whenever we visit the boardwalk!

The rides at Casino Pier are similar to those offered at Point Pleasant (Jenkinson's), and require that you purchase tickets to ride.  There are several price points, but we knew our time was limited so we opted for the 45 tickets for $30.  This allowed the boys to ride a few different rides together and My Oldest to ride a couple on his own (he's the thrill seeker when it comes to rides).  They do offer wrist-band days

The website has a wealth of information that tells you the height requirements for the rides (good to know ahead of time if you have kids that are various sizes!) and how many tickets each ride requires.

If you are heading to New Jersey this summer, make sure you check out the boardwalks and beaches! As we visit other beaches, boardwalks and events, I'll be sharing them here.

Kohr Brothers...my fav boardwalk treat. For the past few years they have had a location inside the Deptford Mall in Deptford, NJ. Nice for us that are closer to Philly than the shore :) I get my fix mid winter sometimes. LOL

We had one open up about 20 minutes from us, but its funny... we haven't made it there! I think I just crave it when we are on the boardwalk for some reason!
